K League 2 playoffs 2026: three matches for the last promotion place

K League 2's promotion playoffs run on Wednesday 2 and Saturday 5 December 2026: two semi-playoffs at 19:00, then one final at 16:30, every match a single tie at the higher seed's ground. The winners join the division's top two in K League 1 for 2027. How the format works, and why the grounds cannot be named yet.

The format, as the league published it

The K League 2 promotion playoffs are three matches, and the K League published their schedule on 27 October 2026. The clubs finishing first and second in K League 2 go up to K League 1 automatically. The last promotion place is settled between the clubs finishing third to sixth: two semi-playoffs on Wednesday 2 December at 19:00, third against sixth and fourth against fifth, then one playoff final on Saturday 5 December at 16:30. Every tie is a single match at the home ground of the higher seeded club, so the regular season table decides not just who plays, but where.

Why this year is different

In earlier seasons, surviving the K League 2 playoffs still left one more tie to win: a promotion and relegation playoff against a K League 1 club, with promotion not yet guaranteed. This year the league has cut that step for the playoff winner. The club that wins on 5 December is promoted and joins the top two in K League 1 for 2027. That makes the final one of the highest stakes single matches in the Korean football calendar: a whole season, and a place in the top division, settled in one afternoon.

The grounds cannot be named yet

There is no honest venue list to print until the regular season closes on the weekend of 28 and 29 November and the final table fixes the seeds, because the higher seed hosts each tie. The map of these playoffs is drawn by the last round of league matches. What a visitor can do now is hold the dates, follow the top six of the K League 2 table through November, and move quickly once the grounds are set: playoff crowds in Korea are loud, local and loyal, and a ground hosting a promotion final will fill. Our event page will name the grounds as the league confirms them. For the wider winter of Korean sport, the events calendar carries the K League 1 run-in plus the basketball and volleyball seasons already under way, and the hotels page covers stays wherever the final table sends you.
